What makes this the most amazing brown gravy pot roast you ask?!
Well, simply put, the flavors are absolutely amazing! There are millions of different variations of pot roast available online. However, this amazing brown gravy pot roast sets itself apart from the rest.
It has been handed down generation to generation in my family, so it is a tried and true recipe.
First off, any meal that you can "set it and forget it," is already a winner in my eyes! My slow-cooker gets a lot of play time during fall. Which is another reason why this is a beautiful recipe.
Place it in the slow cooker, and several hours later you come home to a house that smells wonderful, and a meal that's ready to go!
Another staple that makes this pot roast so amazing, is that you are cooking it right in the gravy. Since the meat simmers and tenderizes in the gravy for several hours, it allows it to absorb all of the delicious flavors.
Furthermore, the robust seasonings we add directly to the pot roast before searing it, add more amazing flavors.
What if I do not have a slow cooker?
No worries! If you don't own a slow cooker (which I highly recommend that you do), you can cook the roast in the oven. Follow all of the instructions below, except the slow cooker part. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Place the roast in a roasting dish, or a cast iron skillet, add about 2 cups of broth (chicken, beef, or vegetable) directly into the pan.
Cover the pan with foil, and place it in the oven. Cook the roast for 3-4 hours. Depending on size of roast, cooking times may vary. Check the roast every 45-60 minutes to ensure there are enough liquids in the pan.
Great side dishes to go with the Amazing Brown Gravy Pot Roast:
- Loaded mashed potatoes
- Cheesy bacon ranch scalloped potatoes
- Southern macaroni and cheese
- A simple rice pilaf
Virtually anything that can help soak up that delicious gravy that the roast is swimming in would make for an amazing side dish.
How to make the Pot Roast:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet (cast iron skillet works best). Evenly distribute the seasoning on all sides of the chuck roast with all of the seasonings, except the rosemary.
- Add the roast to the skillet and sear it on all sides until a nice brown crust forms.
- Once the pot roast is browned on all sides, place it into the slow cooker. Add the onions, celery, and carrots on top of the roast.
- Prepare the brown gravy according to package directions. I like the McCormick brand brown gravy mix because it does not contain MSG, and has a wonderful flavor; however, any brand will work.
- Pour the gravy over the top of the vegetables and the roast. Add the red wine, and Worcestershire sauce into the slow cooker. Red wine can be omitted, but it adds a very rich flavor to the gravy.
- Turn the heat to low for 8 hours, or high for 6 hours.
After a long days work, you will come home to the most wonderful smelling house! The aroma of an amazing brown gravy pot roast will be wafting through the air. Enjoy the roast with sides of your choice.
Refrigerate the leftovers for up to 5 days, or freeze the pot roast in a Ziploc freezer bag for up to 4 weeks.
